Film Reviews
When my sister was born,
I received a blue ribbon.
Written on it was something
to the effect of
“best big brother”,
with an illustration of a toddler
peering over a crib,
ogling a newborn baby.
Whenever Setsuko called out
for her big brother,
I got flashes of my own sister
calling out for me.
I look at how Seita handled
his newfound parental duties,
thrust upon him with callous disregard
for his readiness or willingness.
He accepted his new role,
caring for his sister with unfathomable
selflessness.
Through bombings.
Through starvation.
Through poverty…
…until the very end.
My sister calls me a
“good big brother”,
for which I am grateful.
But I was never a BEST brother
like Seita was to Setsuko.
