In the summer of 2019, I started to write. And write, and write…and unlike my previous screenplays, this one was NOT stopping at the 20 page mark. I soon found myself with a feature-length script, one that I had an inkling I might have an opportunity to make. It had everything: an attainable location, a vibrant environment, characters who could be played by talented people I already knew - I was ready.
February 2020 rolls around and I find myself in Florida, my tiny cast and skeleton crew with me and along for the ride. We shot this 80-minute film in 11 shooting days. It wasn’t a grueling affair; I was very pleased with how streamlined the process was. Having the cast and crew lodge in the location we were shooting mitigated set-up time. Company moves were no sweat. And plenty of breaks were left in the schedule, both to rest the mind and stoke the creative fires.
That isn’t to say this was easy. This was the most important shoot for my growth as a filmmaker. I learned things about managing a set and fostering a creative atmosphere that I never would have learned otherwise. I stumbled along the way, absolutely, but that experience was invaluable - we do not emerge from battle without scars.
After a long, pandemic-addled post-production process, it’s finally here: Florida Man released online May 1st, 2022 and is available to watch right now. I hope you enjoy.
